Digital Transformation Consultant Singapore for SMEs

What a digital transformation consultant does for a company of 5 to 50 staff, what the first 90 days look like, what it costs, and how the grant supports it.

7 min read

For a Singapore SME, digital transformation is not a strategy deck. It is moving the work that runs on paper, memory and WhatsApp screenshots into systems that record it, connect it and report it. A digital transformation consultant maps that work, picks the order to change it in, implements it with your staff and trains them to own it.

Key takeaways

  • Transformation for an SME is three to five workflows moved off paper and memory, in order, with staff trained on each.
  • Start with the process that costs the most hours or loses the most money. Not with the software.
  • The consultant should implement, not only recommend. Ask who builds it.
  • Staff must be able to run and change it after the consultant leaves.
  • Process redesign and digitalisation are EDGE activities. A certified consultant's fee is part of the claim.

What it means for an SME

Large companies buy platforms. SMEs need their daily work to stop depending on one person's phone and one person's memory. In practice that is:

  • Enquiries and leads recorded and followed up. See CRM implementation.
  • Quotes, orders and invoices created from a record, not retyped. See order management.
  • Bookkeeping done from bank feeds and scanned bills, not from a shoebox.
  • Stock, jobs and deliveries visible without asking someone.
  • Reports produced by the system on schedule.
  • AI used for the reading and writing steps, with staff checking. See AI implementation.

What the first 90 days look like

1

Weeks 1 to 2. Map and prioritise. Half a day per function. You get the map, the ranked list and a quote per item. The grant application goes in here, before any build.

2

Weeks 3 to 6. First workflow. Usually lead capture or order handling. Built, run alongside staff for two weeks, trained, handed over.

3

Weeks 7 to 10. Second workflow. Usually quotes and invoicing or bookkeeping. Same cycle.

4

Weeks 11 to 13. Third workflow and reporting. The owner's dashboard is built from the first two. Review meeting, claim filed.

Nothing is built before approval. The map and the quote are done first so the application can be submitted. Building starts when the approval letter arrives. This is how the grant stays claimable.

Choosing a digital transformation consultant

Ask these before signing.

AskGood answer
Who will do the work?A named person who does the mapping, the build and the training.
Do you implement or only recommend?Implement. A report on its own changes nothing.
Do you resell software? No. Advice should not depend on a commission.
Are you a certified management consultant?Yes, with the certified areas stated. Needed for the consultancy fee to be grant claimable.
What do my staff get?Training, an SOP per workflow, all logins in the company's name.
What have you run in your own businesses?Real businesses on the same systems. Ask for examples.

Cost and grant

The mapping stage is quoted as one number. Each workflow is quoted on its own after the map, so you approve the cost item by item. Software is billed to you directly.

Process redesign and digitalisation are EDGE activities from 30 September 2026, with support of up to 70% for SMEs and a $100,000 yearly cap. Where the activity requires a certified management consultant, the consultancy fee is part of the qualifying cost. Details in the SME grants guide and on the EDGE grant page.

Frequently asked questions

We are 6 staff. Is this too small for transformation?

No. Six staff with orders on WhatsApp and bookkeeping in a shoebox is exactly where three workflows make the biggest difference.

Do we have to buy an ERP?

Rarely at this size. See ERP for SMEs. Most of the gain comes from connecting what you already have.

How much of our staff's time does it take?

Half a day per function for mapping, two 30 minute check-ins per workflow during the build, and a two hour training session. Staff keep doing their jobs throughout.

What if staff resist?

They resist typing into a second system. They do not resist a system that removes typing. That is why capture is automated first and staff see the benefit in week one.

Can you work with our existing IT vendor?

Yes. We map and design, they can host or maintain. We say clearly which parts are ours.

Is the consultant fee claimable?

For EDGE activities that require a certified management consultant, yes. We confirm the activity and the rate before you commit.

What happens after 90 days?

A 30 day check-in is included. After that, support is optional. Most clients continue with one workflow a quarter.
