When a customer asks for ESG evidence

Turn the request into an answer your buyer can use.

This service is for Singapore SME finance directors and owners who have received a supplier ESG questionnaire, sustainability-data request, tender requirement or bank question. We start with the request in front of you, not a listed-company reporting exercise.

A customer questionnaire with a deadline

A large customer asks for carbon, workforce, policy or governance information before approving you as a supplier or renewing a contract.

An SGX-listed buyer collecting supplier data

Your buyer needs evidence for its own reporting. You need clear answers, source records and a report that matches the request.

A bank or tender asking sustainability questions

You need a baseline that supports the questions asked, without asking your staff to build a large reporting system from scratch.

An SME with ISO records already in place

ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 records may provide environmental, people and governance evidence that can be reviewed and reused.

What to send first. Send the buyer's request or questionnaire, deadline, company activity, headcount, sites, utility bills if available and any ISO certificates. We check what the request asks for, what you already have and what needs to be collected.

ESG reporting process for an SME

From a buyer request to a report-ready response.

The first report starts with the requirement and the records your business already keeps. We agree the material topics, collect only the data needed for the scope, then prepare the report and the answers your buyer needs.

  1. 01Read the request

We review the customer questionnaire, tender or bank requirement, its deadline and the information your buyer actually expects.

  2. 02Set the scope

We agree the material ESG topics, reporting boundary and data list. You see what your team needs to provide before collection begins.

  3. 03Build the baseline

We organise the available utility, people, safety, policy and governance records. Where the request calls for it, we prepare a Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions baseline.

  4. 04Prepare the report

We draft a GRI-referenced sustainability report aligned to SGX guidance, along with practical policies, targets or questionnaire answers within the agreed scope.

  5. 05Review and respond

You check the facts and approve the final report. We show you the source records behind the key answers and the light tracking routine for the next reporting cycle.

ESG reporting deliverables

A report, a baseline and records your team can find again.

The final scope follows the buyer's request and the data your business can evidence. A typical SME project includes the following working documents and report material.

  • Review of the customer, bank or tender ESG requirement
  • Materiality plan covering the ESG topics relevant to your business and buyer
  • Reporting boundary and data-collection list
  • Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions baseline where required
  • GRI-referenced sustainability report aligned to SGX guidance
  • Supporting ESG policies, targets and action owners within the agreed scope
  • Source-record list for utilities, people, safety and governance data
  • Customer ESG questionnaire answers within the agreed scope
  • Simple tracker for the data needed in the next reporting cycle
  • Review meeting with the people who own the data and buyer response

Cost for ESG reporting

Quoted around the request, data and deadline.

Quoted
per project

Every SME ESG project has a different buyer request, data starting point and deadline. We confirm one clear project quote and timeline after reviewing the requirement and the records you already keep.

Your written quote sets out

  • The buyer request, reporting boundary and ESG topics in scope
  • The information and source records your team needs to provide
  • Whether a Scope 1 and Scope 2 baseline is included
  • The report, policies, tracker and questionnaire answers included
  • Your project contact, review points and target completion date

Grant eligibility depends on the activity and application timing. We explain the current position when we scope the project, but Enterprise Singapore decides eligibility and support.

Timing for a first sustainability report

Typically 4–6 weeks when the records are available.

A first sustainability report for an SME typically takes four to six weeks. The pace depends on the buyer's deadline, the number of sites and whether utility bills, HR records, safety records and existing policies are ready to review.

What helps the work move

  • The buyer's questionnaire, scoring guide and deadline are available at the start
  • A finance or operations contact can coordinate utility, HR and safety records
  • Twelve months of utility bills are available where an emissions baseline is required
  • Current ISO certificates, policies and internal records can be reviewed

What can add time

  • The buyer has not yet stated which framework, boundary or evidence it requires
  • Several sites or business units need data from different owners
  • Utility, workforce or safety records need to be located or checked
  • Management needs extra time to confirm targets, policies or public statements

*Typical timeline for a first SME sustainability report: from confirming the buyer requirement and data list to completing the report and buyer-response material. Your written quote sets out the scope and timing for your business.

Before you send the report

What makes an ESG answer credible to a buyer.

A buyer needs information that connects to records your business can show. Before the report or questionnaire goes out, we check the evidence, boundary and owner behind each material answer.

01

The request is answered

We map each customer, bank or tender question to the report section, supporting record or stated data gap. The response stays within what your business can evidence.

02

The reporting boundary is clear

The legal entity, sites, activities and reporting period are stated, so a buyer can understand what the data covers.

03

The numbers have source records

Utility bills, HR records, safety logs and policies are linked to the reported figure or statement. We flag estimates and missing data rather than presenting them as facts.

04

Scope 1 and Scope 2 use a stated method

Where an emissions baseline is in scope, the report records the activity data, period and method used so your team can repeat the calculation.

05

Policies have an owner

Environmental, people and governance commitments name the person or team responsible for putting them into practice and reviewing them.

06

Next year's data is simpler

The final tracker shows who collects each item, where the source record sits and when it should be reviewed before the next buyer request.

ESG reporting questions from SME finance teams

The cost, records and buyer request.

Short answers for Singapore SMEs that need to respond to a customer, bank or tender. For grant timing and application rules, see our SME grants in Singapore guide.

Does our SME need an ESG or sustainability report?

If a large customer, bank, SGX-listed buyer or tender has asked for ESG data, you need a response that addresses its requirement. The right scope depends on the questions, deadline and evidence it asks for. If no one has asked yet, a basic report can give your business a starting point, but it should still match the records you can maintain.

What should I send for an ESG quote?

Send the customer questionnaire or request, deadline, business activity, headcount, sites, utility bills if available, current policies and any ISO certificates. We review the request first, then tell you what else is needed and provide a written quote and timeline after a short call.

How long does a first sustainability report take?

A first sustainability report for an SME typically takes four to six weeks. It moves faster when the buyer request, utility bills, workforce records, safety records and current policies are easy to access. Several sites, unclear reporting boundaries or missing records can add time.

How much does ESG reporting cost?

We quote ESG reporting per project after reviewing the buyer request, deadline, data starting point and scope. Your written quote states the report, baseline, policies, questionnaire answers and tracking work included, plus what your team needs to provide.

    What framework do you use?

We prepare a GRI-referenced report aligned to SGX sustainability reporting guidance, then adjust the scope to the buyer's request. An SME does not need a listed-company report when the buyer only needs specific supplier information. The report should answer the questions asked and stay within the evidence you can show.

Can we use our existing ISO system?

Often, yes. ISO 14001 records can support environmental information, ISO 45001 records can support safety and people information, and ISO 9001 records can support governance controls. We review what is current and usable, then identify the data or policies that are still missing.

We have no ESG data. Can you still help?

Yes. Many SMEs start with records they already have, such as utility bills, payroll or headcount records, training records, safety logs and policies. We use those records to establish the starting point and set up a light tracker for the items you need to collect going forward.

Do you help answer customer ESG questionnaires?

Yes, where questionnaire support is included in the quoted scope. We map the questions to the report and source records, prepare the responses with your data owners and flag questions where the business does not yet have sufficient evidence. You review and approve the final response.

Can ESG work receive grant support?

EDG closed to new applications on 29 September 2026. EDGE is open and its published business areas include Automation & Digitalisation, Standards and Sustainability. Apply before starting work, signing, paying or placing a deposit for a project where support is sought. We check the current activity requirements during scoping, but Enterprise Singapore decides eligibility and support.
