Most SMEs working with ZES are certified to ISO in two to four months. Combining ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 is usually close to the time needed to implement one standard properly because the shared work happens once, while the environmental and safety registers are prepared in parallel.

A combined audit can review the shared system together, but the certification body still tests ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 requirements separately. Before Stage 1 and Stage 2, we check that your evidence reflects both the environmental and safety parts of the work.

Why combine ISO 14001 and ISO 45001?
The two standards share the same 10-clause structure. A combined project can use one policy, objectives, legal register, training records, internal audit and management review. Your team still maintains a separate environmental-aspects register for ISO 14001 and hazard-and-risk register for ISO 45001.
Do we receive one certificate or two?
Two. If the independent certification body certifies both standards, it issues an ISO 14001 certificate and an ISO 45001 certificate. A combined project and combined certification visit do not turn them into one certificate.

How long does the combined project take?
For an SME, two to four months is typical from kickoff through the certification body's audit process. Several sites, varied activities, new controls that need time in use or unavailable audit dates can add time.
What does our team need to do?
Choose one project contact and make the people responsible for management, operations, sites and safety available to explain how work is done. Your team confirms the certificate scope, reviews the documents, uses the agreed records, joins the internal audit and management review, and is available for certification-body interviews.
We already have ISO 45001. Can we add ISO 14001?
Yes. The existing ISO 45001 system already has much of the shared backbone. We add the environmental controls and work with you on the extended certification scope. The certification body decides whether this happens at your next surveillance audit or through a separate scope-extension visit.
Does ISO 45001 make us eligible for bizSAFE Star?
ISO 45001 certification is the basis for bizSAFE Star. With an ISO 45001:2018 certificate from an SAC-accredited or MRA-recognised certification body, the Risk Management Audit Report and the other bizSAFE requirements in place, your company can apply to the WSH Council for Star recognition. We can guide you through that route.
Who conducts the certification audit?
An independent accredited certification body conducts the ISO audits and decides whether to issue the certificates. At Stage 1 it reviews readiness and documents. At Stage 2 it samples records and speaks with staff about how the system is used. ZES is separate from the certification body and prepares your team for the audits.
What if the certification body raises findings?
Your team needs to address the findings and provide the evidence requested before certification can be issued. We help you work through the points and prepare the evidence. The certification body decides whether its requirements are met, so we do not promise an audit outcome.
