What is ISO 45001, and why do clients ask for it?

ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management. Certification means an independent auditor has checked that your company spots hazards, controls risks and protects its people systematically, not just on paper.

Simply put: it's proof you run a safe operation. In Singapore it's also the standard behind bizSAFE Star, so the two are natural to do together.

What ISO 45001 does for your business

  • Qualify for tenders that demand a certified safety system
  • Pass main contractor and MNC pre-qualification
  • Fewer incidents, stoppages and MOM attention
  • Clear duty-of-care evidence if something goes wrong
  • The direct route to bizSAFE Star, the top of the ladder

Common questions

How much does ISO 45001 certification cost in Singapore?+
ZES implementation packages start from $2,288. Add the certification body's stage 1 and stage 2 audit fees and a typical SME spends $4,500 to $9,000 in the first year, then $1,000 to $2,000 a year for surveillance audits. Your exact figure depends on headcount, sites and risk profile.
How long does it take to get certified?+
With us, most SMEs are certified in 2 to 4 months: a few weeks to build and embed the safety system, then the certification body's audit. Doing it alone commonly stretches to 6 to 12 months.
What's the difference between ISO 45001 and bizSAFE?+
bizSAFE is Singapore's national ladder, and bizSAFE Star, its top level, is audited against ISO 45001 / SS 506. So ISO 45001 is the international standard, and Star is the local badge built on it. Going for both in one project is the efficient route, and we guide bizSAFE too.
Is ISO 45001 mandatory in Singapore?+
No law requires certification, though the WSH Act still applies to everyone. In practice, tenders and main contractors increasingly require ISO 45001 or bizSAFE Star before you can qualify for safety-critical work.
We already have bizSAFE Level 3. Is ISO 45001 a big step up?+
It's a meaningful step, Level 3 audits your Risk Management Plan, while ISO 45001 is a full management system: leadership, worker participation, legal compliance, objectives and continual improvement. The good news: your Level 3 work counts towards it, and we build on what you have.
Did ISO 45001 replace OHSAS 18001?+
Yes. OHSAS 18001 was withdrawn in 2021 and ISO 45001:2018 is its successor. If your old documents still reference 18001, they need migrating, which we handle as part of the project.
What happens during the certification audit?+
Stage 1 checks your documentation is in place. Stage 2 is the main audit: the auditor walks your workplace, watches how work is done and talks to your staff about hazards and procedures. We walk you through both beforehand so there are no surprises.
Can we do ISO 45001 together with ISO 9001 or 14001?+
Yes, and it's usually cheaper than doing them separately because the standards share the same structure. Many clients combine ISO 45001 with ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 in one project.
